    I am still curious about the meaning for the @handle.
    Why I need that?

      The @handle is a variable that hold the XML data in a memory tree after the data has been shredded in the first stored procedure. Then the OpenXML function uses that variable to locate the day to extract it, and then the final stored procedure uses the @handle to locate the data and clean up memory.
